Saint-Peter's church

Father Emmanuel Furci, parish priest of Saint Peter of Montmartre, has accepted to describe his church for us. We are grateful to him.

St Peter's church of Montmartre - consecrated on 21st april 1147 - has always played a role in the life of the neighbourhood, as well as of Paris and the whole of France.

Originally an Abbey of Benedictines nuns who came from the convent of St Pierre in Reims (hence the name), our church has also a good claim to be the oldest parish in Paris, although Montmartre was incorporated into the 18th circonscription of the city only in 1860, by Haussmann.

St Peter's is noted for its partly romanesque, partly early gothic architecture. Its harmonious dimensions have made of it a building of human proportions both for the visits and for services on the Lord's day or great religious occasions. Opening appropriately on to the Place du Tertre (The mound's square), it has become the place where the artists come to venerate their patron saint, " Our Lady of Beauty ".

Many of the passing tourists linger to admire the architecture and the stained-glass windows, the general harmonious effect and also to take time to collect themselves in prayers.

These stones give witness to 850 years of worship, of thanksgiving and of intercession.

They call on us to become living stones of the Body of Christ - the Church - for mankind of to-day and to-morrow.
