The Carmel of Montmartre

This convent, its foundation and its religious life are closely linked to the Basilica. This is demonstrated by architecture : even the white stone of which it is built recalls that of the Basilica.

We are grateful to the Carmelite nuns for this fine explanation of their vocation.

The Carmelite monastery was founded in the heart of the great city, next to the Sacred Heart by Paray le Monial itself, a Carmelite foundation, also devoted to the Sacred Heart. Its function was to be a discreet subsidiary of the Basilica, in unceasing prayer to the Heart of Christ, demonstrating also the strength of its everlasting love for mankind.

Since 1928, twenty sisters have lived in the joy and strength of the enclosed order to bear witness to the living God and to intercede for all the men and women of the world.

Sainte-Thérèse de l'Enfant Jésus

At Christ's bidding, the Carmelites want to follow him into the desert ; like him to pray and worship the Father in silence and solitude. A supplication which, in its day-to-day poverty, aims not to replace the prayers of those who do not pray, but to inspire them to do so. This is the task and the service of the Carmelites. This life, illuminated by the contemplation of the Virgin preserves the ideal of the desert Fathers, the ancient hermits of Mount Carmel. Ste Teresa of Avila developped it in Spain in the XVIth century. Closer to our own time, Ste Therese of Lisieux, Elisabeth of the Trinity or Therese Benedict of the Cross follow the same way. Right in Paris, amidst an ever more urban world, the Carmelites testify to the love of God.
